Earth Day 2010 - Celebrate Green with Wool Mattresses and Bedding
This Earth Day, Surround Ewe™ wants to share with you more about wool found in your Surround Ewe™ organic ECO-Pure® wool bedding and how it is helping our planet "Go Green"!
Wool is a renewable resource
A renewable resource is a natural resource that can naturally replace and replenish itself. As you know, most sheep grow a fiber on their body known as wool. This wool will continue growing for the life of the sheep, so it replenishes itself after the sheep has been sheared. In the course of a year, one sheep alone can produce anywhere from two to thirty pounds of wool. The variables affecting this number are the sheep’s breed, genetics, nutrition, and how often they are sheared.
Wool is environmentally friendly
Wool is washed three times in a chemical free soap, dried, and goes through the carding process and made into batts. This method has very little impact on our natural environment. Wool is also a biodegradable fiber, so small scraps and debris left from the shearing process can be put right back into the earth instead of piling up inside a landfill. This waste can be spread onto agricultural land and improve the quality of the soil, because it is a natural source of nitrogen.
Wool gives us cleaner air
Wool has the natural ability to absorb indoor air contaminants. Wool is also naturally resistant to soil and stains, so it needs less cleaning. This means less chemicals and pollutants are released into the air.
Wool can prevent cancer
Well, that might be a stretch, but when used for insulation, sheep wool can absorb and break down toxins in the air such as formaldehyde. The World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have identified formaldehyde as a carcinogen, or a cancer causing agent.
Wool is fire resistant
We’ve talked about this one before, but it is worth mentioning again: wool has a high resistance to fire and will extinguish itself if it should happen to catch on fire. Because of this, wool is favored by the U.S. Military and airlines throughout the world. Reducing the number of fires on our planet will reduce the amount of carbon monoxide released into the air. It will also help decrease the amount of burned debris dumped into our landfills after a fire.
As you can see, the wool used in your Surround Ewe™ organic ECO-Pure® wool bedding is beneficial in multiple ways.
